To remove vinyl with chemicals, you must:

2. Turn the t-shirt inside out, so the back of the decal is face up.
3. Apply the chemical to the shirt where the decal is located until it is soaked through.
4. If using rubbing alcohol or acetone, you may want to soak the decal directly in the liquid.
5. Pull at the fabric and wiggle the decal to loosen it.
6. Turn the t-shirt right-side out and use tweezers to pry at the edges of the vinyl.
7. Work carefully to remove the vinyl and resoak the fabric if needed.
8. Rinse, wash and dry the shirt as needed.

In some cases, you may need to gently scrape away leftover vinyl. If that doesn’t work, grab some petroleum jelly and laundry detergent. Apply the jelly to the back of the decal, apply a few drops of detergent and rub it in until the adhesive clumps. Then, you should be able to rinse everything off with hot water.

Heat-transfer printing goes by many names including thermal printing, thermal-transfer printing and thermal-wax transfer. This process transfers an image to an object, such as a t-shirt, using heat. The image is first printed onto special paper or vinyl. In some cases, the image is produced by layering wax dye on a shirt or other item.

You can easily create your custom t-shirt at home using this method. All you need is a regular printer and heat transfer paper. An iron provides the heat you need. For small projects, this is a cost-effective method. 

Heat transfer printing can also be used for large-scale projects, such as a business promotion. However, the heat transfer method is less economical for large projects.

What Is Screen Printing?

Screen printing uses a combination of ink transferred directly to the object and a stencil through which the ink passes to produce the design you want. The printing industry also refers to this as serigraph printing, silk screen printing and serigraphy. This printing method works on bags, t-shirts, glassware, backpacks, binders, flags, ceramics, signs and many other objects, including snowboards and skateboards. It costs less, too, unless you need small quantities.

This process requires a few steps, beginning with printing the design to transparent acetate film. The design is then cut out. The acetate film is placed on a mesh screen coated with a layer of light-reactive emulsion. To get the image you desire, you need to place your stencil down in reverse.

When exposed to light, the emulsion hardens, but the areas covered by the stencil will remain liquid. The liquid is then rinsed away, leaving you with a screen stencil. When printing a multi-colored design, a screen stencil must be created for each color.

This screen is laid over the fabric, and ink is poured onto the screen. The ink is spread evenly across the stencil using a squeegee. When creating multicolored designs, you must use extreme care to lay the screens in perfect alignment. This process works exceptionally well for commercial-size projects but is not cost-effective for small projects.

Heat transfer items can achieve highly detailed designs, so they look fantastic when first created. Unfortunately, they don’t age as well as screen-printed ones. You can achieve fine details with silk screen printing, but it is a meticulous process. On the plus side, as long as high-quality ink is used, screen-printed items can look great for a long time.

Choose the Right Type of Hats

Some types of hats are more suitable for screen printing than others. The optimal hats for screen printing have a surface that can be laid flat for easier printing, like unstructured or foam hats. Five-panel hats can also be used for screen printing. You can typically find these types of hats sold along with bulk t-shirts and other printable items so you can see what options are available for displaying your images. 

Different styles of hats have different-sized printing areas, so you must take into account the size of the area you need for your image. Foam-front caps have the most printable area with an average space of 4 x 8.75 inches. Full-front crown-style caps have a slightly smaller printable area at 4 x 6.5 inches, and low crown caps have an area measuring roughly 3 x 5.75 inches. Visors’ print area averages 2.75 x 6.5 inches.

Go Easy on the Ink

The materials that are used to make hats are less absorbent than the materials to make t-shirts, so a little bit of ink can go a long way. When you are designing an image to be screen printed on a hat, use only a few colors and allow ink-free spaces in the image to increase its chances of appearing sharp and readable. If a designer is helping you come up with the image, they will be able to give you some tips on how to make sure it’s legible.

Keep the Design Compact

Artwork that will be screen printed on a hat must be more compact than a design used on a t-shirt due to the limited amount of room on the hat for printing. For this reason, small designs with solid shapes tend to work best for hat printing. If you are doing a hat/shirt combination, the design for the shirt can usually be recreated as a similar, smaller design for placement on the hat.

Curved Cap Printing May Require Warped Designs

If you are using screen printing on a type of hat that cannot be easily laid flat, there is a curved printing technique you can use to mark the image on the hat, but the design will have to be different. Certain shapes drawn flat become distorted when printed curved, so the solution is to warp the images in the drawing phase so that they come out properly in the printed phase. Warping the images by hand may be difficult, but professional printing operations have the equipment and experience to get the job done right. 

Consider Additional Decorative Options

There are many decorative options you can use on screen-printed hats to enhance the overall design. These may include using glittery or metallic inks, adding embroidery or using puffy or jeweled designs with the printed image. Tie-dye is a fun and easy way to add color and pattern to fabric. You can tie dye almost any kind of fabric, from T-shirts to bed sheets, and the results are always unique.

While tie-dye patterns can seem complicated, most are quite easy to achieve. With a little practice and lots of 1-dollar T-shirts, you’ll be able to tie-dye anything in any color scheme you can imagine. Here are 11 exciting tie-dye patterns and how to perfect them!

1. Single Spiral

The single spiral is the most classic tie-dye pattern. You can distinguish it by its single, continuous spiral of color. To achieve this tie-dye pattern, start by folding your fabric into a tight coil. Then, tie a piece of string around the center of the coil to secure it. Dip your fabric into a bucket of dye, making sure to saturate it completely. When you rinse and unfold your fabric, you should see a single spiral of color.

2. Bullseye

To tie dye a bullseye pattern, lay your fabric on a flat surface and pinch it at the center, gathering the fabric into a thin cone shape. Then, place rubber bands around the cone, spacing them evenly apart. The number of rubber bands to use will depend on how many circles you want in your design.

Then, take each section of fabric between the rubber bands and apply a different color of dye. After letting each section sit in the dye, squeeze the rubber bands to allow the colors to blend slightly. Rinse the fabric in cold water and remove the rubber bands. You should now see a series of colorful circles.

3. Crumple

Also known as the “scrunch” or “nebula,” the crumple tie-dye pattern is created by – you guessed it – crumpling your fabric. This is a great technique for beginners because it’s very forgiving; you don’t have to be precise in your folding to achieve good results. It’s also very versatile as you can create it using anything from bucket hats to backpacks to our simple white T-shirts for tie-dye.

To achieve a crumple pattern, start by scrunching up the fabric into a loose ball and applying rubber bands at random intervals. Then, dye the fabric according to your desired color scheme. You don’t need to be precise with the dye – just make sure that each section is saturated with some type of color. Once the fabric has been dyed, rinse it and remove the rubber bands.

4. Stripes

This tie-dye pattern is a simple but effective design. There are numerous variations of the pattern as the stripes can be diagonal, horizontal or vertical. To tie dye stripes, start by creating a series of accordion folds in the fabric. The folds should be alternated so that each one is pointing in the opposite direction. Be sure to fold the fabric in the direction you want the stripes to go.

After the fabric is folded, tie rubber bands around it to secure its shape, spacing them one to two inches apart. The number of stripes you end up with will depend on how many rubber bands you use.

Begin applying the dye, starting with the lightest color. Work your way from the outside of the fabric towards the center, applying a different color to each section between the rubber bands. Allow the dye to sit for a while before rinsing it out in cold water.

5. Box Folds

The box tie-dye pattern is achieved by folding the fabric into a series of small squares. This is another design that is excellent for beginners because it’s very easy to achieve precise folds.

To set up your box pattern, start by laying the fabric flat, then fold it lengthwise into accordion folds, moving left to right. Create sharp creases in the fabric by firmly pressing the edges of the folds. Next, apply this same folding technique widthwise, making sure that each fold matches the size of the lengthwise folds. When you are done folding, you should have a square-shaped bundle of fabric.

Before you begin applying the dye, place the square bundle between two square-shaped pieces of cardboard and wrap rubber bands around the edges to secure it. This will help keep your folds in place while you’re working.

You have two options for dying the bundle of fabric: dipping it into the dye or squeezing the dye onto the edges. Either way, you’ll want to make sure the fabric is thoroughly saturated. Once the tie dye is complete, rinse and remove the cardboard. You should see a series of squares with sharp, clean edges.

6. Mandala

The mandala, also known as the kaleidoscope, is one of the most intricate and beautiful tie-dye designs. And although it’s a bit more advanced than some of the other designs listed here, it’s fairly easy to master once you’ve had a little practice. Just be sure to stock up on some wholesale shirts so you can try again if needed!

To tie dye a mandala, start by folding your fabric into a wedge shape. This is done by folding it in half lengthwise and again widthwise. You’ll then need to fold it diagonally. Fold it diagonally once more before securing the shape with rubber bands. The placement of the rubber bands should depend on where you want each color to be and the desired size of each ring of color.

Once the fabric is folded, begin applying your dye. You can use as many colors as you want, but it’s best to stick with three or four. Work your way from the outside of the fabric towards the center, applying a different color to each section between the rubber bands. Be sure to flip the fabric over so that you can apply dye to the underside as well.

Allow the tie-dye to sit before rinsing it out in water. Removing the rubber bands should reveal a pattern that resembles a flower or a star.

7. Rainbow Spiral

The rainbow spiral tie dye is one of the most popular patterns, and it’s not hard to see why. This design is bright, colorful and eye-catching. It’s also a great choice for beginners. And unlike most other patterns, the rainbow spiral is easy to achieve using thicker fabrics, such as our wholesale hoodies.

To achieve this pattern, lay your fabric on a flat surface and place your hand in the center before firmly twisting in a clockwise motion. As you twist, the fabric will begin to bunch up and form a spiral. Once the fabric is tightly spiraled, use rubber bands to secure it in place. The resulting bundle of fabric should be shaped like an irregular circle.

Now you’re ready to start applying the dye. Starting with the lightest color, apply each color to a uniform section of the fabric bundle. Flip the bundle over and apply the dye to the same sections of the underside. Once you’re finished, you should see a beautiful spiral pattern with each color clearly defined.

8. Zig-Zag

The zig-zag tie-dye pattern requires a fair bit of precision, but it’s definitely worth the effort. To achieve this design, start by folding your fabric lengthwise into at least three equal sections. Then, create a series of small diagonal accordion pleats, making sure that each fold is about the same width.

Once you’re finished folding, secure the fabric tightly with rubber bands, spacing them evenly along the length of the fabric. Using three to six colors, apply each color of dye to a different section of the fabric bundle between the rubber bands. Be sure to alternate the colors to create a uniform pattern. After rinsing the dye, you should see a series of large zig-zag lines running down the length of the fabric.

9. Sunburst

The sunburst pattern is an intricate design characterized by a series of rays emanating from a central point. To begin, fold your fabric in half lengthwise. Then, grab a small piece of fabric from the center of the folded side and gather both the top and bottom portions around it to form a cone-like shape.

As you create the cone shape, be sure to make small folds in the fabric to create a ruffled effect. Once you’re happy with the shape, tie the fabric securely with rubber bands across the length of the cone. Each one should be spaced relatively even, with about two inches between each band.

Now it’s time for the dye. You can choose from a variety of color schemes, but this pattern is a particularly great option for a monochromatic look. To achieve this, choose at least four shades of the same color. Starting with the lightest color, apply each shade of dye to a different section of the fabric cone. Alternate the colors as you work your way down the cone to create a gradient effect. Then, apply the darkest shade vertically in a band-like fashion between each color section.

Flip the fabric over, and let it sit for a few minutes to allow the dye to bleed through to the underside. Once the colors have bled through, take the darkest shade again and create horizontal bands of color across the length of the fabric. Allow the tie-dye to sit, rinse it out in cold water and unfold the fabric to reveal a series of rays radiating from the center.

10. Geodes

The geode tie-dye pattern is a great way to add some interest to a plain piece of fabric. To achieve this design, start by folding your fabric into a square shape. Then, tie the fabric tightly with rubber bands to create four equal sections. Once you’ve tied the fabric, dip it into a dye bath and allow it to soak for a few minutes.

After the fabric has had a chance to soak, remove it from the dye and rinse it out in cold water. You should see a pattern with four distinct sections, each of which is a different color. To create the geode effect, take a sharp object like a needle or toothpick and gently poke small holes into each section of tie-dye. The holes should be evenly spaced and relatively small.

Once you’ve made the holes, allow the tie-dye to sit for a while so that the colors can bleed together. Rinse and unfold the fabric to reveal a beautiful geode tie dye design.

11. Heart

The heart tie-dye pattern is a great way to show your affection for tie-dye (or someone else). To get this design, start by folding the fabric in half lengthwise. On the folded edge, use a washable marker to draw a half-heart shape.

Next, fold small accordion pleats along the fabric, starting from the folded edge. The pleats should follow the drawn line of the heart, with the marker in a straight direction at the top of the folds. They should start fairly deep and get progressively shallower as you follow the curve of the heart.

Once you reach the end of the fabric, tie a thick rubber band around the fabric, placing it along the line. Then, add the dye to each section. The topmost color will end up being the color of the heart, so plan your colors accordingly!

Shop 1 Dollar T-Shirts for Your Next Tie Dye Project

If you want to do some tie-dyeing, don’t run to the store to buy a kit just yet! You might have everything you need to create your own custom apparel in your kitchen. With food coloring, you can achieve bright colors using natural ingredients rather than chemical dyes. And even if you stocked up on several 1 dollar t-shirts to tie dye, a few of those little bottles of food coloring go a long way. Read on to learn how to tie dye with food coloring. 

1. Gather Your Supplies

This project requires basic crafting supplies you probably already have lying around the house, including: 

• Food coloring in your choice of colors
• White vinegar
• Shirts or accessories to dye
• Condiment squeeze bottles
• Salt
• Gloves
• Something to protect your work surface
• Plastic bags
• Rubber bands
• Large bowl

Plain t-shirts are the best option for tie-dyeing, especially for beginners. Wholesale hoodies work well, too, though. You can also try dyeing wholesale hats if you’d like to make one-of-a-kind accessories. Whatever you choose, garments and accessories made from 100 percent cotton are best. Cotton/polyester blends work, too, but the results usually aren’t as vibrant. 

2. Soak 

Combine one part vinegar and one part water in a large bowl, making sure there is enough liquid to fully submerge the item you want to dye. Place the item in the bowl and let soak for one hour. This will allow you to achieve vibrant results. After an hour, remove the item and wring it out to remove excess liquid. 

3. Choose and Create Your Design

Decide on a design for your shirt. From the classic spiral to bull’s eyes, hearts and more, there are tons of options. Of course, you are also free to wing it and see what happens rather than following a specific pattern. 

Fold, crumple and twist your shirt or another item as desired, and secure the fabric with rubber bands. 

4. Mix and Apply Dye

Fill a squeeze condiment bottle with about half a cup of water and then add approximately 15 drops of food coloring. Shake to mix. Repeat for each color you’d like to use. Then, apply the food coloring solutions to the fabric just like you would if you were using regular dye. Be sure to apply the food coloring to both sides of the clothing item to ensure even coverage. 

When finished, place the item in a plastic grocery bag. Let sit for a minimum of eight hours to ensure the food coloring has time to set. We recommend waiting even longer for the most eye-popping results. 

5. Rinse and Wash 

Wearing plastic gloves, take the item out of the bag and carefully remove the rubber bands while rinsing under cool water. Keep rinsing until the water runs clear. Finally, wash the item separately using hot water and gentle laundry detergent. Dry using high heat to help set the food coloring dye. We recommend washing the item by itself for the first several washes to avoid staining your other clothes.

Tie-dyeing shirts and accessories with food coloring is a fun and affordable project. Keep in mind, though, that food coloring dye will fade over time. If you don’t already have a Cricut and plan to buy one specifically for making shirts, be mindful when selecting a model. Sure, you can make vinyl shirt decals using any current model, but there is one option that is better than all the others. If you’re serious about making shirts, you’ll need a machine that’s dependable and offers a great deal of flexibility — especially if you’re thinking about starting a business. In this case, the Cricut Maker 3 is the way to go. The Cricut Explore 3 is a solid option, too, if you’re a more casual user and looking to save some cash. However, it doesn’t offer nearly as much versatility as the Maker. 

2. Be Mindful of Materials

Not all vinyl is created equal. For starters, only certain types are made for use on shirts and other garments. For this project, you need heat transfer vinyl (HTV), not regular vinyl. In addition, there are several brands and vinyl types from which to choose. Cricut brand vinyl is a popular option, but it certainly is not the only one. Many crafters and business owners alike prefer Siser EasyWeed Heat Transfer Vinyl because it is durable, affordable and easy to work with. You may need to do some experimenting to determine what type of vinyl works best for you. 

3. Invest in a Heat Press

You might be thinking that you don’t need to invest in a heat press if you already have an iron lying around. That’s not necessarily true, though. While you technically can use a regular household iron to apply HTV, it’s not as easy as you would assume. It’s nearly impossible to achieve consistent pressure with an iron. Plus, most irons don’t allow you to set a specific temperature. With a heat press, you set the pressure, temperature and time according to the HTV’s instructions. Having a heat press makes the process easier and much more consistent. Try making your first shirt using an iron and you’ll quickly understand why most experienced shirt makers recommend investing in a heat press!  

4. Understand Design Sizes

Adding designs to wholesale hoodies and tees isn’t as simple as cutting it out and sticking it on with your iron or heat press. If you want it to look right, you need to be mindful of the design’s size. You also need to consider the positioning. Don’t just eyeball the design and estimate where it should go. Get out your tape measure to create an appropriately sized design and ensure proper placement. 

5. Be Patient

If you are new to the world of making shirts with a Cricut, don’t expect to dive right in and start a profitable business. Be patient as you learn, and don’t be afraid to make mistakes. What Is a Heat Press Machine? 

A heat machine is a device used to apply pressure and heat to various surfaces for a specific amount of time. Most are used with fabric, but there are also specialty heat presses for hats, mugs and more. When shopping, you will need to choose between a manual press and an automatic one. Manual presses give you full control over the time and temperature, while automatic presses remain closed at the specified temperature for the amount of time you set. Each has its own benefits, so the decision largely depends on personal preference. Learn more about how to choose a heat press machine to make the best decision possible. 

Using Your Heat Press to Customize Blank Apparel

Whether you’re working with wholesale hats, hooded sweatshirts or t-shirts, the process for applying designs with a heat press is roughly the same. 

Step One: Choose Your Materials

Select a garment or accessory to customize. Many fabrics are appropriate for this customization method, but beginners should avoid synthetics, like vinyl, as well as waterproof fabrics. Cotton, polyester and cotton/polyester blends work best. Pre-wash the item and dry completely. 

Use heat transfer vinyl (HTV), not regular vinyl. It’s designed specifically to adhere to clothing. HTV comes in a rainbow of colors, and there are even options like glittery and flocked vinyl. 

Step Two: Select and Cut Your Design

Using your vinyl cutter’s software, select a design and adjust it to an appropriate size. You can also create your own design or upload one from an outside source. When you’re ready, send it to your cutter like any other design. 

Weed the design and trim away any excess vinyl to make it a manageable size. 

Step Three: Preheat Your Heat Press

Set your press to the appropriate temperature and give it some time to warm up while it is open. If you’re unsure what temperature to use, check the machine’s manual or look the information up online. 

Step Four: Set the Time and Pressure

Adjust the gauge on your press to the appropriate pressure setting. You can determine this by checking the manual, reading the instructions that came with your vinyl or doing a bit of online research. Most fabrics require medium pressure, but this varies. 

Set the timer. Typically, heat transfer vinyl needs to be pressed for ~15 seconds. Again, do your homework to make sure you set the correct amount of time. 

Step Five: Place Your Design and Press

Place your garment on the heat press, pulling it tight so there aren’t any wrinkles. Align it carefully to make placing the design easier. If desired, pre-press it to remove any wrinkles.

Carefully put the cut vinyl design on the shirt with the adhesive side down. Take your time to avoid injuries and get the design lined up just right. Consider laying a Teflon sheet over the design to keep the vinyl from sticking to the press’s top plate.

Once everything is arranged to your liking, pull the heat press machine’s handle down until it locks in place. The timer will start counting down and let you know it’s time to reopen the press. Let the vinyl cool for a few moments before removing the Teflon sheet.

Remove the clothing from the press, give it a few more minutes to cool and then peel off the backing. Avoid washing for at least 24 hours to give the adhesive time to set.

Many years ago, knowing how to accurately measure sleeve length was an essential skill. Buying shirts today is as easy as going online, making a few clicks, and waiting a couple of days for your new apparel to show up in your mailbox. 

It was not always that easy, though. Long before people could go online to shop for bulk t shirts and other garments, they had to make clothing themselves or order custom shirts from professional tailors. And since apparel wasn’t nearly as affordable or easy to obtain as it is now, they had to be certain of every measurement to ensure that what they made or ordered would fit properly. 

While knowing how to measure sleeve length is not quite as necessary now as it was in years past, it is still a handy skill to have. Even if you typically only purchase ready-to-wear clothing, you never know when you might need to order a custom-made shirt from a tailor for a special event. Or, if you are a business owner, you could have a customer reach out to you regarding the length of your products’ short and long sleeves.

General Information: Why Sleeve Length and Arm Length Aren’t the Same

Before we dive into the exact process of measuring sleeve length, it is essential to note that the length of your arm does not always equal the sleeve length that you need. Sleeves do not always end at the same point on one’s shoulders, and shoulder width varies from person to person. Someone with broad shoulders will need a much different sleeve length than someone with narrower shoulders, even if their arms are the exact same length. 

In addition, the shape of the armhole plays a role in the overall size of the shoulder area of a shirt. This, of course, impacts sleeve length. Armhole shape and size vary depending on the style of the shirt, whether it is intended for men or women, and the brand/designer. 

For these reasons, measuring yourself to determine what sleeve length you need requires more than just measuring the length of your arm. 

How a Sleeve Should Fit

In a well-fitting shirt, the shoulder seam should sit comfortably at the edge of your shoulder at the point where it starts to slope downward. It should not sit on top of your shoulder or hang down to your upper arm.

For long-sleeved shirts, the cuff should end at your wrist. Half an inch of the shirt should be visible when worn under a suit jacket. There is a bit more flexibility for short-sleeved shirts. For men, they should fit close to the biceps and reach to just above the elbow. Since short-sleeved women’s shirts come in various styles, the exact length of the sleeves can vary significantly. There are cap sleeves that just cover the shoulders and sleeves that extend to the mid-bicep area. 

As long as the shirt fits well and the sleeves are not overly loose or tight, you don’t need to be extremely concerned about their exact length. 

Why You Might Need to Measure Sleeve Length

There are a few situations when knowing your sleeve length might be helpful. If you ever need to shop for a nice dress shirt, you will notice that the sizing often has two numbers separated by a slash. The first number indicates the size of the shirt’s opening, or your shirt collar size. The second number is the sleeve length. In order to choose the correct size, you will need to know your sleeve length. Otherwise, it’s a guessing game. 

Knowing your sleeve length is helpful if you ever need to take a shirt to a tailor, too. While a tailor will likely measure you themself if you bring in a shirt with sleeves that need adjusting, being able to tell them your ideal sleeve length will make the process easier. Knowing your preferred sleeve length means the finished shirt will fit well and be comfortable.

While you likely cannot modify your merchandise to ensure it will fit each customer perfectly, knowing how to measure the sleeve length of a shirt will help you provide accurate, useful information to your customers.

Determining Your Sleeve Length

If you need to determine your sleeve length when shopping for a dress shirt or having one custom-made by a tailor or designer, you will need a fabric tape measure. For the most accurate results, we recommend having someone help you. Calculating your sleeve length requires taking a few measurements, some of which are difficult to figure out on your own. 

First, measure from the nape of your neck to the edge of your shoulder, where it begins to slope. At the nape of your neck, the end of the tape measure should be centered and in alignment with your spine. It’s much easier to measure this accurately if you have someone who can help you. If you’re having trouble, measure across your back from the edge of one shoulder to the other. Then, divide the measurement in half. 

Measuring your arm is the next step. Hold one end of the tape measure at the top of your shoulder and measure to just past your wrist bone. Bend your elbow slightly when measuring. This will leave a bit of ease and ensure that the sleeve will not be too short. If you measure with your arm completely straight, the shirt you ultimately purchase or have made will likely have sleeves that are too short.  

Once you have both measurements, add them together and round up to the nearest whole number. The resulting number is your shirt sleeve length. Whether you identify as a man or a woman, this technique is the most accurate way to measure your sleeve length. 

How to Measure for a Short-Sleeved Shirt

While you are most likely to need to know sleeve length when you are shopping for long-sleeved shirts, there are times when knowing what short sleeve length you need can be helpful, too. Short-sleeved shirts are an ideal alternative to long sleeves on warm days. When they fit properly, they are suitable for a wide range of occasions. Unfortunately, lots of folks end up looking less than professional by wearing shirts with sleeves that are too long, short, loose, or tight. 

The process for measuring for a short-sleeved shirt is pretty much the same as measuring for a long-sleeved shirt. However, the difference is that instead of measuring all the way to your wrist, you should only measure to where you want the hem of the sleeve to reach on your upper arm. For men, this usually means measuring to the center of your bicep or slightly below. The sleeve should not extend all the way to your elbow. 

For women, measuring to the exact right point on the arm is not quite as important. For professional looks, sleeves that extend to roughly mid-bicep are the best option. But since sleeves come in more styles and lengths for women than men, determining the length that’s most comfortable for you is a good option, too. If you have a shirt that you love, measure based on where its hem reaches on your upper arm to determine your ideal length for short-sleeved shirts. 

Measuring the Sleeve Length on Shirts You Already Have

When you need to measure the sleeves on a shirt you already have, start by laying it out on a flat surface and smoothing out any wrinkles. If you are measuring something bulky, like wholesale hoodies, you may want to iron the garments first to make sure they are completely flat. If you are measuring a shirt for yourself, make sure it is one that fits properly. The armhole seam should rest right where your shoulder begins to slope, not on top of your shoulder or hanging down to your upper arm. 

Place one end of a fabric tape measure at the nape of the shirt’s neck. Make sure it is exactly in the center. Then, measure the distance to the seam where the body of the shirt meets the sleeve. Next, measure from that seam to the end of the sleeve. Finally, add that measurement and the first measurement together to determine the length of the sleeve. 

Additional Tips on How to Measure Sleeve Length

As we previously mentioned, having someone help you is the best way to get an accurate measurement. Holding the measuring tape at the back of your neck and extending it along the length of your arm is tricky. Having a friend help you out is the best way to ensure accurate results with minimal frustration. 

You may need to round your measurement up. If, for example, the sleeve length you come up with is 31.5 inches, consider rounding up to 32 inches. In addition to leaving a bit of ease to ensure the sleeve won’t be too short, this will make shopping easier. Different brands and retailers have different ways of advertising shirt sizes. Some offer half-inches, so you may see tags that say 14/31.5 (or something similar). Others label ranges, so you might see 14/31-32. Others only list a single whole number, so you may need to choose between 14/31 and 14/32. Whatever the case may be, rounding up is generally the best way to ensure a good fit. 

When measuring, relax your body. If your attempt to measure when your back, neck, shoulders, and arms are tense, you will likely end up with sleeves that are too short. Maintaining a relaxed posture while measuring — and even bending your elbow a bit — ensures that your shirts will have plenty of room for movement.
