Employee safety has become the main priority of many companies in today’s workforce. A central part of any safety plan is making employees in busy workspaces as visible to their coworkers as possible by utilizing high-visibility apparel.

High-visibility work clothing has become as integral a part of personal protective equipment as a hard hat or safety glasses. Construction sights, rail transportation, airports and warehouses are just a few examples of industries that have taken advantage of high-visibility apparel to protect their employees.

High-Visibility History

The high-visibility trend first took off in Europe, especially in the road construction industry. For safety reasons, the clothing worn by road crews clearly contrasted with their work environment, making them easily visible to drivers at any angle.

Wearing bright clothing outperformed the brightly colored construction vests that were favored at the time in the United States. The problem with wearing vests was that, when viewing the employee from the side, the vest was not visible at all. The vest’s effectiveness was only present when viewing the employee directly from the front or the back.

Eventually, the European switch to high-visibility clothing caught on in the United States. This adoption came about as part of the American National Standards Institute’s (ANSI) approval of a voluntary standard for high-visibility apparel. The ANSI instructs employers on how to outfit their employees with high-visibility apparel in low-visibility industries.

These industries included construction workers, railroaders, emergency responders, airport ground crews and others.  ANSI approves high-visibility garments in a variety of apparel styles including: shirts, vests, jackets and coveralls.

The ANSI standard sets forth guidelines to provide full visibility of workers. It has 360-degree performance criteria, factoring in the background.

In daylight, bright colors are encouraged to provide visibility. At night, ANSI recommends clothing that is made with retroreflective material that shines backlight to its source at night.

The voluntary standard was created from concerns that employees are often exposed to low visibility hazards. Unfortunately, before ANSI, many of these workers were not wearing appropriate high-visibility apparel.

Workers who do not wear high-visibility apparel face numerous hazards, the simplest of which is being struck by vehicles or other types of moving equipment. This includes the risk of being struck by your own coworkers, who may know that you are around somewhere, but cannot always easily see your exact location. Accidents happen, but high-visibility apparel can help reduce that risk.

Shirts over Vests

In the past, it was common to see employees of busy workplaces wear vests with bright colors and reflective materials. While effective, these vests were often uncomfortable, unfashionable and unpopular with employees.

In most hospitals, it is mandatory for employees, especially the medical staff, to wear scrubs whenever they are working. The price of scrub sets has come down over the years to the point where they have now become the standard hospital attire. But these scrubs were not always around, and there is a pretty interesting story about how they came into existence and became such an integral part of the medical profession.

The White Nurse’s Uniform and the Butcher’s Apron

The typical nurse’s uniform is something that we are all more or less familiar with. It is a white garment with a red cross, complemented by a white hat. This stereotypical image of the nurse has been around for centuries. Compared to that, the creation of a scrub uniform for medical professionals is a pretty recent invention. In the early years of medical surgery, doctors would practice in their regular street clothes. In certain cases, a butcher’s apron was worn to prevent blood from spilling onto the doctor’s clothes. Back in those days, there was nothing disturbing about the sight of a bloody doctor’s apron. In fact, it was the mark of the doctor’s proficiency and excellence. The more blood you had, the more patients came to you for surgery.

The Transition from White to Green

As time progressed, medical professionals realized that wearing a bloody butcher’s apron was not exactly the most hygienic way of performing a medical surgery. They understood that this practice posed the risk of fatal infection. They felt the need to maintain a sterile medical environment. There was nothing sterile about a surgeon walking around with the blood and guts of another human being on his butcher’s apron.

In an attempt to decrease infections, the doctors from the 1940s began to use operating rooms where they would wear antiseptic gowns while performing surgery. This gown protected their clothing and prevented the spread of infection to a certain extent. The gowns worn by the surgeons were white in color.

Even though these surgical gowns were technically cleaner than the butcher’s apron that was being used previously, they looked a lot less clean because they were doused in bright red blood. For a lot of people, the sight of the red blood against the white surgical gown triggered a disturbing experience. As a result of this, medical professionals slowly switched to the color green, and white aprons became obsolete. The “surgical green” is a pretty decent color for medical uniforms because it blends color much better than white, and it reduces eye strain.

The Evolution of Scrubs

The gowns were not the only thing that became green in color. The color of the entire uniform was switched from white to green. This became known as the standard surgical green uniform. If you take a look at shows from a couple of decades ago, you would notice surgeons wearing the green uniform. As these surgical greens became more popular, people started labeling them as scrubs. The reason for that is because these green uniforms were originally worn by people who “scrubbed in” for surgery.

As the years passed by, the color of scrubs began transforming into different shades of blue and green. Nowadays, there is no standard color or style for scrubs. Medical professionals can wear different styles of scrubs that have varying patterns and colors. You have fun printed scrub tops, solid bottoms, and matching sets on the market.

The change in the color of the scrubs has been complemented by a change in the fabric. As the medical field progresses in skill and technology, we will continue to see the development and evolution of scrubs. They are no longer just used to make blood less visible. Underwear has not always been worn and the styles have changed many times through the years (though many may argue that going from loincloths the thongs have almost taken us full circle). Let’s take a look at some interesting fact about those items of clothing most of us wear, but not many talk about.

• The average British woman owns 34 pairs of underwear. American ladies own 21. Men own an average of five to eight. It’s not just that women buy more underwear, but women tend to hang on to them once they are purchased. Fifteen percent of women own underwear that is five to ten years old. Ten percent of men have underwear that has been in service for over a decade. Men tend to buy sets that are practical. Women will buy several sets and keep a few stashed away for special occasions.

• Just because underwear is owned it doesn’t mean they are worn. A survey of French men revealed that only 60 percent change their underwear daily. French women were a little better at 75 percent. On average, British men changed their skivvies more often than French men or women at 78 percent, but even they lagged well behind British women with 95 percent changing their unmentionables each morning. Americans fall in between the British and the French. A 2011 survey by Clorox found that nearly 15 percent of men wear their underwear two to three times between washes On the whole, married people tend to change their underwear more than single people, though not much more: 88 percent to 82 percent.

• The average pair of clean underwear contains feces. Charles Gerba, a professor of microbiology at the University of Arizona said, “There’s about a tenth of a gram of poop in the average pair of underwear.” Further, bladder leakage is common among women who have had children and in many middle-aged men. Washing machines don’t clean them out because the water is not hot enough and the detergents cannot kill the bacteria. According to ABC news, “If you’re not using bleach or very hot water, you’re not killing the bacteria — they’re getting on your hands and staying in the washing machine.” If this is not a reason to frequently buy and change out your underwear, what is? • The 1920’s and 1930s introduced major changes to the underwear market. The “flappers” of the 1920s started wearing decorative and more “risque” undergarments. Because the girdle created a small waist by tightening from below instead of constricting the ribcage, it provided women with an hourglass figure without the dangers associated with the corset.

• Major advanced in the underwear market took place in the 1950s. The creation of spandex and rayon made many new styles and concepts of underwear possible. For the first time, underwear started to become expressive and not just pragmatic. The 1950s also saw innovation from the Pacific islands make its way into the underwear market. The bikini brief was born. Not only did this new cut and style revolutionize the industry, it is the most popular style of underwear to this day.

• Speaking of preferences, men prefer to wear briefs. In fact, 41 percent choose briefs (including the bikini cut brief), 7 percent favor boxers, and 32 percent wear thongs, other variations, or nothing at all. For women, 37 percent prefer bikini briefs, 23 percent favor briefs, 19 percent choose thongs, 17 percent like boyshorts, and 4 percent prefer other underwear styles.

• Euromonitor data showed the global underwear market in 2014 was worth just over $110 billion. The vast majority of this was women’s underwear. According to the NPD group, “The men’s underwear bottoms market reached $2.7 billion and grew 3 percent in the 12 months ending September 2014.” What this really means is that we don’t need to be re-wearing our underwear. It also means that we are spending way too much on our skivvies. Many types, brands, and variations of quality underwear can be purchased for pennies on the dollar at clothing discounters like The Adair Group.
